Tour Description
The Kilimanjaro 5-day Marangu route is one of the shortest and most direct paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Also known as the "Coca-Cola" route, it is favored by many due to its relative ease and comfortable accommodations in mountain huts along the way. This route starts at the Marangu Gate and ascends gradually through lush rainforest before reaching the alpine desert zone near the summit. While the 5-day itinerary offers a quick ascent, it provides less time for acclimatization compared to longer routes, which can increase the risk of altitude-related illnesses.

Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
The journey commences at Marangu Gate, the starting point for the Marangu route. After completing necessary registrations and formalities, you'll begin your trek through lush rainforest. The trail is well-maintained and relatively gentle, gradually ascending as you make your way towards Mandara Hut. Along the way, you'll have opportunities to spot unique flora and fauna endemic to the region. Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop, offers basic accommodations in A-frame huts and provides a cozy setting for rest and relaxation.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Today's trek takes you further into the mountain's foothills as you continue through the rainforest zone and into the heath and moorland zone. The trail gradually steepens, offering occasional glimpses of Kilimanjaro's towering peaks through breaks in the canopy. You'll pass through stunning landscapes characterized by rolling hills and ancient lava formations before reaching Horombo Hut, your next overnight stop. Here, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding plains and distant peaks, as well as the comfort of the mountain huts.
Day 3: Horombo Hut (Acclimatization Day)
Today is designated as an acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. You'll remain at Horombo Hut and have the option to embark on a day hike to Zebra Rocks or explore the area around the hut. The day hike offers stunning views and serves as an opportunity to gain elevation before returning to Horombo Hut for another night of rest. This rest day is crucial for acclimatization and prepares you for the challenges ahead.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Leaving Horombo Hut behind, you'll ascend further towards the alpine desert zone. The trail steepens as you climb higher, and the vegetation becomes sparse, giving way to rocky terrain and sweeping vistas. You'll pass by landmarks such as the Last Water Point and the Saddle, a vast plateau situated between Kilimanjaro's peaks. Eventually, you'll reach Kibo Hut, your final base camp before the summit attempt. Here, you'll rest and prepare for the challenging ascent ahead, ensuring you're mentally and physically ready for the summit push.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (summit) to Horombo Hut and Departure
The summit bid begins in the early hours of the morning, typically around midnight, to ensure you reach the summit in time for sunrise. The trail ascends steeply towards Gilman's Point, located on the crater rim, before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. Upon reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment. After celebrating your achievement and capturing memories, you'll begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest. From there, you'll continue the descent to Horombo Hut, where you'll spend your final night on the mountain. The following morning, you'll descend further to Marangu Gate, where you'll sign out and receive your summit certificates. With memories of your epic adventure and a sense of accomplishment, you'll transfer back to your accommodations, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro expedition.
