Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp
The trek begins at Londorossi Gate, where trekkers register and commence their journey. From there, they embark on a scenic drive to the Lemosho Glades, the starting point of the trek. The trail winds through lush rainforest, where trekkers may encounter a variety of flora and fauna, including colobus monkeys. The day's trek concludes at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, where trekkers set up camp and spend their first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp to Shira 1 Camp
The second day of the trek involves ascending through the rainforest and into the heath and moorland zone. Trekkers traverse across the Shira Plateau, a vast expanse of high-altitude terrain characterized by sweeping vistas. The day concludes at Shira 1 Camp, situated on the edge of the plateau, where trekkers rest and acclimatize to the increasing altitude.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Continuing their journey across the Shira Plateau, trekkers ascend further towards Shira 2 Camp. Along the way, they may encounter unique geological features, including volcanic rock formations and ancient lava flows. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as trekkers gain altitude, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Today's trek involves ascending to Lava Tower, a prominent volcanic formation at an altitude of approximately 4,600 meters (15,100 feet). This serves as an important acclimatization point, allowing trekkers to adjust to the altitude before descending to Barranco Camp. The descent to Barranco Camp takes trekkers through the alpine desert zone, where they may encounter unique high-altitude vegetation.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with a challenging ascent of the Barranco Wall, a steep scramble that rewards trekkers with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. After conquering the Barranco Wall, trekkers continue their journey across the alpine desert terrain towards Karanga Camp. Situated beneath the southern face of Kilimanjaro, Karanga Camp offers breathtaking views of the glaciers and towering cliffs above.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today's trek takes trekkers from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The trail ascends steadily through rocky terrain, culminating in a challenging climb to Barafu Camp. Located at an altitude of approximately 4,600 meters (15,100 feet), Barafu Camp offers trekkers stunning views of the summit and surrounding landscape. Here, trekkers rest and prepare for the summit push.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (summit) to Mweka Camp
The summit attempt begins in the early hours of the morning, typically around midnight, to ensure trekkers reach the summit in time for sunrise. The trail ascends steeply towards Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. After reaching the summit and celebrating their achievement, trekkers begin their descent back to Barafu Camp. From there, they continue down to Mweka Camp for their final night on the mountain.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
The final day of the trek involves descending from Mweka Camp through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where trekkers sign out and receive their summit certificates. From there, they transfer back to their hotel for a well-deserved rest and celebration of their accomplishment.
